Title: Mark Anthony Inexperienced
Sundance mission: “Opus,” an A24 thriller he wrote and directed. The film, his first function, stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Younger Mazino, Stephanie Suganami and Tony Hale. After premiering at Sundance, the movie opens in theaters March 14.
Notable previous credit: Inexperienced spent 13 years at GQ; he began writing for the publication at age 19, his first job as soon as he graduated from Morehouse Faculty. “In a macro sense, I feel a whole lot of my style and my voice, I discovered that at GQ,” he says. Previous to “Opus,” he wrote and directed a brief known as “Trapeze, U.S.A.” in 2017.
Inexperienced began writing “Opus” almost 5 years in the past, whereas nonetheless at GQ. (He formally left the journal in 2023 and has since relocated to L.A.)
“I learn so many filmmakers who’re like, ‘I had a dream after which this factor occurred’ and I used to be like, ‘Oh, that’s an concept for a film,’” Inexperienced says. “My method to filmmaking is like there’s a basket with issues that I wish to say in regards to the world, after which there’s a basket of worlds that I feel visually and culturally could be actually attention-grabbing to discover. After which if one factor from one basket and one factor from the opposite basket line up in a approach that feels subversive and feels shocking and entertaining before everything, then possibly I’ve a movie there.”

“Opus” follows a younger author, performed by Edebiri, who travels to a distant island on the invitation of a reclusive pop icon, performed by Malkovich, to listen to his long-awaited comeback album. The movie is being known as each a horror and a thriller — both is okay by Inexperienced, simply as long as you don’t name it elevated horror (“I feel that time period is bulls–t”). The film explores our fascination with celeb tradition, and Inexperienced hopes it leaves audiences with questions.
“I feel the cool factor about being an artist is that you just don’t need to have the solutions. You simply need to make one thing provocative sufficient for individuals to ask the questions,” Inexperienced says. “I might love for individuals to look at ‘Opus’ and interrogate this type of epidemic of tribalism that exists in each leisure and out of doors of leisure. It’s not simply an American epidemic. And I feel that ‘Opus’ at its most profitable model, individuals have a dialog about that. And if that occurs, I’d be ecstatic. I’m ecstatic now.”
He bought the decision that his movie could be at Sundance proper earlier than Thanksgiving and “the trustworthy reply is I freaked out,” he says.
“Sundance has all the time prioritized Black filmmakers, girl filmmakers, queer filmmakers, freaks like myself that wish to say daring issues in odd methods. And so for me, there was no higher place to indicate this movie,” he provides. “There was no greater honor to indicate this movie for the primary time.”
Inexperienced realized about filmmaking by means of YouTube, books, podcasts, documentaries — and a standard message was to put in writing characters with a brief checklist of actors in thoughts. Malkovich was on the high of his checklist for the character Moretti, and the at-the-time unknown Edebiri for Ariel. Inexperienced is pals with Edebiri’s “The Bear” costar Lionel Boyce, who performs Marcus on the present, and due to that plus his job at GQ, he was despatched an early screener of season one.
“I did a factor I’m not speculated to do: I watched, I used to be like, ‘holy s–t, that’s it,’” he says of Edebiri. “So I mailed it to our exec at A24, which I used to be not speculated to do, and I used to be like ‘That is her.’”
